A New Cook is in the Kitchen at the Leader
From Greg Madson, Publisher, The Leader (Tremonton)
If there is one thing that is always consistent, it’s that there will always be change.
A few weeks ago my assistant editor Dave Archer let me know he was moving on to ‘greener pastures’ in Tooele County. He and his wife, Kristen, took a job working for a company who helps troubled teens.
Not only was Dave my right hand man at the paper, but also he was my son-in-law. The dirty bugger quit on his father in law and he took my grandkids with him!
That left me in a precarious situation, being without my top writer at a newspaper. However, luck shown my way as I ran into the answer I was looking for.
Many of you know Box Elder county native Ellen Cook. She is the former mayor of Honeyville and has written for our paper before. Previously she spent 10 years as the assistant editor of the News Journal in Brigham City. I ran into Ellen one day after Dave told me he was leaving and I gingerly asked her if she was ready to get back into newspapers?
To my relief she said yes. From there our talks began and she eventually assumed the role of editor. Ellen comes into the job with a decided advantage, and frankly, that’s what made it so appealing to hire her. She knows this county and its residents.
But her resume speaks for itself. She has been writing for newspapers for the past 33 years, mostly in the area. A Box Elder High graduate, she attended USU and BYU, studying English and journalism. A community activist, she has been on the Box Elder County Fair Board for years.
Married to Boyd Cook for 35 years, together they had seven children and six grandchildren. Tragically the family lost two boys to death; one son died as a baby from birth defects and one son fell asleep while driving home from Logan and was killed in Deweyville.
When asked to write some things readers might find interesting about herself, Ellen cringed, but did say her interests included “writing, of course, especially poetry, cooking, quilting and crocheting.”
We are looking for great things from Ellen and hope you will take the time to call or email her at 435-257-5182 or
