*For Immediate Release (March 8, 2010) –*
The Utah Humanities Council announces a new partnership with Southern Utah University to offer The Venture Course in the Humanities. Venture is a free, two semester, accredited humanities course for students living on low incomes. Day care, books, and transportation are all provided free of charge. Successful applicants should demonstrate a firm desire to complete the two semesters, be at least 18, living on a low income, and able to read a newspaper in English. Interested members of Cedar City and surrounding communities are encouraged to apply by contacting Lindsay Fullerton at 435.586.5420.
Venture is a year-long, introductory humanities course taught by university faculty. The program inspires students through sections in literature, American history, art history, philosophy, and writing/critical thinking. The Venture Course will accept approximately 25 students for the seminar-style class.
Upon completion of the course, Venture students satisfying all requirements will receive academic credit from Southern Utah University. The experience provides more than credit, however. As one former Venture student put it, “Venture has helped me to make decisions that will change my future. I had always had a drive to learn. Now that feeling is intensified.”
Venture is made possible by a generous grant from Alternative Visions, a fund of the Chicago Community Trust. For more information, contact Lindsay Fullerton at 435.586.5420 or visit www.utahhumanities.org/Venture.htm
