Shaw, who heads up the two Brehm Communications papers, is a 10-year veteran of newspapers, with a longer background in magazine publishing and freelance writing.
Shaw succeeds Greg Madson, the publisher of The Leader, a weekly publication in Tremonton, Utah. At the time Shaw was elected to office other members of the executive board were either replaced or retained as well. Kari McFee (Wasatch Wave/Summit County News, Heber) is the organization's new vice president, with Craig Conover (Spanish Fork Press, Spanish Fork) taking over the secretary's position. Laurie Wynn (also of the Wasatch Wave), who has twice been president of the association herself, will act as treasurer for the year.
New executive board members include Zane Taylor (Times-Independent, Moab) and Trent Eyre (MediaOne). Board members that were retained included Lee Carter (Ogden Standard Examiner, Ogden) and Dixie Brunner (Southern Utah News, Kanab).
Shaw has spent his entire newspaper career at the Sun Advocate, starting out as a reporter in 2000, becoming community editor in 2003, then moving on to the general manager's position in 2005 and finally was named publisher of the two papers in the winter of 2006.
Shaw's background includes working for Granite School District in Salt Lake County for 15 years, during which time he worked in facilities management after attending the University of Utah. He then worked in sales for various companies including two insurance companies, Coca Cola and Orkin Pest Control.
During the early 1980's his career in writing finally took off as he was published in various magazines on the state, local, national and international levels with stories ranging on everything from building systems to historical pieces.
In 1987 he left Granite to go to work for Harris Communications in Irvine, Calif. There he served for some time as the company's managing editor of their business magazines and other publications along with helping to manage and organize a large national trade show each year.
Returning to Utah he continued his writing career while he and his wife Sherill purchased and ran a floral business in the St. George area. Later they returned to the Wasatch Front and he took jobs with a couple of other firms in management and sales.
In 1990 Shaw took a job with the College of Eastern Utah in the facilities department and the family moved to Price. He worked there for four years and then created his own consulting firm working with school districts and colleges around the nation on their facilities management problems. He continued to write and published articles in many magazines including International Traffic Technology, Your Church, Salt Lake City magazine, European Maintenance Journal and other varied kinds of publications. That continued until he joined the Sun Advocate.
Shaw is presently a member of the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce and works with various community organizations to support their goals.
His interests are fairly broad and he finds a good hard day of physical labor as interesting as any day at his desk. He enjoys hiking, fishing, four wheeling, reading (largely biographies), working on all kinds of puzzles and taking care of the all the animals he and his wife raise on their couple of acres in Carbonville, which includes 20 dogs, two horses, four goats and numerous cats. He true passion is tied to the dogs he raises (Siberian Huskies) and he can often be seen dog sledding in the winter or training the dogs in the spring or fall on a four wheeler.
He and Sherill are the parents of three children, Colby (Price), Kimberly (Riverton), and Mitchell (Minneappolis, Minn.). The couple have seven grandchildren and one on the way.
