The Media Financial Management Association will assist the Newspaper Purchasing Management Association (NPMA) with administration of NPMA’s Richard N. Miller Scholarship Program.

NPMA’s Richard N. Miller Scholarships will be awarded in amounts up to $5,000 to a maximum of five eligible enrolled college students. Individual scholarships will be awarded to a child, stepchild or legally adopted child of a full-time employee in the newspaper industry.  Student applicants must also be enrolled in an accredited college or university as of fall 2010.

Applications must be completed and postmarked no later than 30 July 2010. A copy of the application form may be found on MFM’s web site: http://www.mediafinance.org/docs/NPMA%20SCHOLARSHIP%20APPLICATION%202010.pdf

Completed Applications shall be mailed to:

A Scholarship Committee composed of a minimum of three former NPMA members will evaluate applicants using the following criteria:

• High school grade point average and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American Collegiate Test (ACT) results or college grade point average

• Participation in high school and/or college activities

• Participation in community activities

• Recommendation letter from high school principal, high school counselor or college counselor.

Scholarship winners will be announced no later than September 15, 2010.  The scholarships will be paid in the winning students’ names to the college or university in which they are enrolled.

NPMA’s Scholarship program was renamed in 1991, in honor of Richard N. Miller, a purchasing and facilities management executive with the San Diego Union – Tribune Publishing Company.  Miller joined NPMA in 1968 and later became a director and officer of the Association, including serving as its President from 1979 to 1980. Miller, who was instrumental in establishing the NPMA Scholarship Program, also served as editor of the Association’s newsletter from 1978 – 1985.

NPMA, which is in the process of dissolving, selected MFM to manage its final year of scholarship awards because MFM serves many of the same member companies.  In the past, INFE (Interactive and Newsmedia Financial Executives) provided management services for NPMA members.  Last fall, INFE combined with MFM under MFM's leadership.

“We are honored to be entrusted with managing NPMA’s scholarships for this final year,” said Mary M. Collins, president & CEO of MFM and its BCCA subsidiary.  “We look forward to both optimizing the value of this year’s scholarship program and to exploring ways to enhance MFM’s educational programs and services in order to meet the needs of purchasing management executives as part of our broader mission.”

The Newspaper Purchasing Management Association was established in 1958 by a group of newspaper purchasing executives to serves as a valuable resource for knowledge, best practices and career growth for purchasing management executives at newspapers and newspaper groups of all sizes from throughout the U.S. and Canada.
